Here's a scam attempt that hit me a couple of days ago.
Suddenly, I could no longer access my hard drive.
Also, I could not access my desk top, but I could
still get on the Internet.
I feared the worst in terms of a virus, worm or trojan
horse, etc.
I used an online paid service that I was already aware of
that could diagnose and fix whatever ailed my computer
over the Internet.
When the service completed the work, they explained
I had several malware items on my computer.
After a couple of days the malware was supposed to
present me with a pop-up window asking me if my
computer was slow or not working right and offering
to fix it for a one time fee.
If I then paid via credit card or debit card I would be
charged that fixed fee EVERY MONTH.
Not only that but the only way to stop the recurring
charges would be to actually CANCEL the card.
Anyway, the service recommended to me a free
malware software which they said was excellent
and they installed it with my approval:
http://Malwarebytes.orgI already use Avast anti-virus but NO software
catches everything, so I would advise everyone
add some anti-malware/spyware software to
your security arsenal if not already in place.
Hope no one has gotten stung with this malware
scam.
