Most employers these days go through your resume looking for reasons not to hire you. This may be as a result of the global recession. To satisfy them therefore, the following are some of the things you must avoid:
• Never ask what they do. To be successful during your interview, you must not fail to do your homework and research the company on what they do prior to the interview.
• You should not asked how much you will make in this position. Do not spend any time during the interview on salary and pay. You must have researched this before the interview. Get the job first and if the salary is not what you expected you have the power to say no after the interview, just as the company has the power to say no before the interview.
• Note that this is business environment, business talk and language should be used during the interview. Never use slang.
• Do not lie. If you do not know how to handle administrative work, do not say you can when preparing your resume, if you did you will get caught during the interview.
• Even if you left your former employer with bad feelings, avoid bad talk about them. It is unprofessional. If asked about them, make a statement of facts, do not exaggerate.
• Never come to the interview unprepared. Be ready to say what you want to improve upon, something you want to learn, the tool of the trade that you would like to expand on. Have answers for these because you will be asked these questions in most interviews.
• Keep personal things private. Do not tell the employer your life story. They do not want to know if you just had a baby in the house who is not allowing you to sleep. They may see this as a weakness. If you are not getting enough sleep at night you may be late to work most mornings.
• Do not wear jeans to an interview. You must dress to impress. Remember that the first impression is hard to forget. Make sure you are dressed in business attire for the interview even if the job does not require a dress code.
• Even though it is difficult to relax during interview for a new position, you must make concerted effort to relax as much as possible. Get a good night’s sleep the day prior to the interview to look refreshed and confident.
